Either way, I managed to use it to beat one stage so badly that I earned 90,000 EXP, just from that one level :lol :lol :lol (1/5th of the entire EXP I'd earned in all other levels combined, up to that point).īasically, every time you add a level 1 gem to a higher-level gem, the higher level one gains a very small stat increase. I'm not sure if it's as-designed, or if it's an exploit that will be patched. I was leveled-up from completing optional missions.Īlso, I found an EXTREMELY powerful tactic. The final stage could be completed at a much lower level, though. It runs smoothly for me.īeat the game, tonight. But in the beginning it's a must.ĮDIT: Re Framerate - you can lower the graphic quality in options. Later on when you have more skill points to spread around, this is less essential. If a stage provides you with none, drop a few extra points into cheaper towers. If a stage provides you with several towers, take points out of cheaper tower building, and into something more useful. In the beginning of the game, you might need to tailor you few skill points for every single stage, to squeak by. (There are exceptions to this, but it doesn't come into play until much later). Tri-color and higher receive dmg penalties. single-color and dual-color gems receive dmg boosts. Don't combine gems with more than 2 colors. This will give you some "breathing room" at the start of some of the earliest stages. Put the skill points from your first few level-ups into more starting mana. It increases the amt of mana you get from enemies by 5%, and will pay off in the long run. For stages with more waves, if you can AT ALL manage it, spend some mana to increase the size of your mana pool, at the start. A ton of level 1 gems might not break the armor. The only thing to watch out for is armored waves. Unlike nearly all TD games, Gemcraft is balanced so that having many low-level towers is better than a few super powerful towers. Eventually you learn the ins and outs and cruise through the stages (although you still have to play smart).

So if you find yourself stuck or frustrated on any early stage, feel free to ask me for tips in this topic. The fact that tough levels require you to edit your skills to succeed (basically making a custom build)? The fact that the RPG-esque level system is *included* in the game balancing & is 100% necessary, and doesn't unbalance the entire game, like all other TD titles? The excellent exponential increase in tower/trap building cost, making you weigh whether a new tower is worth more or less than an upgraded gem?īE WARNED: Gemcraft has a reputation for being fairly punishing difficulty-wise, if you don't have a good grasp of Tower Defense basics, or don't catch on to the game's tropes (towers vs. I originally was going to make the OP much bigger, expanding on many more specifics about what makes Gemcraft Chapter 0 so brilliant, but there's honestly so much to it, I'm not sure where I would start. Strong high-level character progression/EXP system to tie together the individual stages. The gameplay itself is extremely strategic, and throws out virtually all preconceived notions of what a Tower Defense game should be. What makes GemCraft Chapter 0 amazing isn't the numbers game, though. (I'm contemplating making some gigantic google docs spreadsheet so GAF can compare/compete for our 800+ high scores) High scores for each mode on each level are tracked. Just like the levels, each mode has it's own personality.

Different levels have very different personalities and need to be approached with different strategies. ~80 levels, and they AREN'T just cookie cutters, or filler. It's bigger and deeper than any DS game or XBLA/PSN game I've played in a long, long time.

I'm absolutely stunned at how deep and full featured the game is.

The game doesn't track time played, but I've EASILY spent 10 hours with it, probably more.
